Chapter 9: Addendum

Zach sat down at the little table with my son asleep on his chest and said, "I need you to know I didn't know you were married."

"I know."

"You had your ring in your purse."

"Yes."

"I slept with a married woman."

"On paper," I said. "I was married on paper. It said so on page one, and it also said we would sleep in separate rooms, and we did, for three years."

He looked at me.

"He never?"

"Not once. It wasn't that kind of contract."

Zach took that in with a slow shake of his head.

"Okay," he said. "I'm still going to feel bad about it for a while."

"That's allowed. It's not in writing, but it's allowed."

"Do you feel bad?"

"No," I said. "I feel like I was a person for one night."

I had meant it as a plain fact, and it came out smaller than I'd planned.

He heard it.

I watched him hear it.

"Janie, don't say it like that."

"It's how it was. I know what I was to you. I was one night, and you were a nice man in a bar, and I'm sorry I made it complicated. You don't owe me anything."

"Don't," he said.

"It's true."

"I called a bartender four times," he said. "I looked for a woman in a green dress for nine months. You can say a lot of things about it, but you can't say I didn't want to find you."

I kept my eyes on the table.

"Then why didn't you?" I said.

"You gave me a first name, a lemon drop order and a very good laugh. I had nothing else to go on."

That was too much for the kitchenette.

I got up and took the napkin down from the cabinet.

It was soft from being handled, and my TERMS FOR DINNER were still on it in capital letters.
