Chapter 15: The Morning
Anders's POV
She woke me at five by taking the blanket off me.
I opened my eyes on the dark ceiling of the inn.
The first thing I knew was cool air on my bare chest and the weight of her sitting across my thighs.
She was in the white robe the inn kept in the closet, belted loose.
Her hair was down, and she had been awake a long time.
"Daphne," I said.
"Not that name this morning," she said.
"This morning I'm Dara."
"All right," I said.
"By noon I won't be," she said.
She put both hands flat on my chest, and I felt every finger.
I had slept maybe two hours.
I had lain awake the rest of the night listening to her breathe, and thinking of nothing but that church.
My plan for it was to stand wherever she put me.
It wasn't much of a plan, and I knew it.
I took ships across the worst bar on the coast, and I had never been so afraid of a room.
"You're thinking," she said.
"Yes."
"Stop."
She untied the belt.
The robe fell open, and the gray light lay across her breasts, the silver stretch marks and the dark triangle below.
My whole body answered before my mind had finished the thought.
"Hands," she said.
"On the headboard."
I put them there.
I had learned that the rails meant more to her than they did to me, and that they meant a great deal to me.
I held the cold brass and looked up at her.
"Good," she said.
She leaned down and kissed me, slow and unhurried, tasting of sleep and salt.
She kissed my jaw, and my throat, and the center of my chest.
She moved down me by inches.
Her hair trailed across my stomach.
Her mouth found my hip bone, and then the tender place inside my thigh, and I made a noise I hadn't meant to make.
She took her time, as she always did.
It was the thing I loved most about her and the thing I could least stand.
