Chapter 12: What the Pills Were For

Fenny sat up and pulled the sheet over his lap.

He did not look at Cavan.

"It was the first day," he said.

"At the clinic."

"When I put my hand on your stomach." Fenny took off his glasses and rubbed his eyes. "You changed, and I felt myself change with you. I felt it in my hands first. The heat, the hardness. A beta can't do that."

Cavan lay very still.

"I've had the condition since I was fifteen," Fenny went on, in a flat, careful voice. "It lets me flip, a little, in one direction, when I'm frightened. The tablets hold it. I thought that was all it was."

"And then?"

"And then I touched you, and it wasn't that. It was you. Whatever you were, I was the opposite. Alpha when you were omega. Soft when you were alpha. Down to the breath."

"You knew."

"I knew by the time I'd washed my hands."

"And the pills?"

"They don't treat anything in me." Fenny's mouth twisted. "They never did. They were only holding down what I felt around you. Around anyone like you. It's why I could never take a lover. The tablets kept me quiet."

The room was grey with the first light.

Cavan sat up slowly.

"You told me it was treatment," he said. "At the desk, that morning. You told me an alpha in rut has to be grounded."

"It was a lie."

"In the linen room. In the nest. You called it medicine."

"It was a lie."
