Chapter 21: The Aisle

The wedding was held on the long lawn behind the Grandwell house, under a white tent with the sides rolled up.

Two hundred chairs stood in rows on the grass, and Benjamin had taped a laminated program to every one.

Raven waited at the altar of white roses in a black suit, and he could not feel his hands.

Thompson stood beside him as his best man, with a clear water bottle in his jacket pocket.

"You're swaying," Thompson whispered.

"I'm fine."

"That's about the twentieth time you've said it today."

"Who gave you a tally?" Raven hissed.

"Noah did," said Thompson. "He said I'd earned the margin."

The music began, and two hundred people turned in their chairs.

Raven forgot to breathe.

Noah came down the lawn in a pale grey suit with a white rose at the lapel.

He had honey-brown hair brushed back for once, and his hazel eyes were fixed on Raven the whole way.

On his arm, in a pale green dress, walked Gracy.

She was five foot three, and she was walking him down the aisle with her chin up.

She had been crying since the first chord.

Halfway down, she stopped and fussed the rose straight on his lapel.

"You look wonderful, my darling," she said, loud enough for the first six rows.

"Thank you, Mom," said Noah.

The word made Gracy's face crumple.

She said, "Nobody say anything," and walked the rest of the way holding on to him.

At the altar she put Noah's hand into Raven's and kissed them both, hard, on the cheek.
