Chapter 22: Still Married

The judge called a recess for twenty minutes.

I do not remember walking out of the courtroom.

I remember the marble hallway, and the cold water fountain, and Posey saying my name from a long way off.

Then Lachlan was in front of me, pale in the harsh light.

He held the printout out in his hand as if it were a weapon he'd been handed by mistake.

"Ione," he said.

"Don't," I said.

"Let me explain."

"You've got about four minutes before my sister breaks your nose," I said. "Make them good."

Posey, behind me, cracked her knuckles.

Verity said, from somewhere, "I'll hold her coat."

Lachlan drew a breath.

"I never filed it."

"The petition."

"The one you signed in Posey's kitchen. When the courier took it, it went to my mother's attorney. He called me that afternoon to say he was filing it at the end of the week." He kept his eyes on mine. "I told him to hold it."

"Hold it."

"I said I wanted to review it. He agreed. By the time my mother realized, I had the original in my hand, and I put it in a drawer."
