Chapter 26: Her Terms
"Keep it," I said. "Don't file it, don't burn it. Put it back in the drawer."
"Ione."
"Not yet. I'm not deciding anything tonight, and I don't want you deciding it for me."
He nodded slowly, his forehead still against mine.
I stepped back, because I wanted to think, and I could not think with his hands on my face.
I crossed to the window and looked down at the river.
"I have terms," I said.
"All right."
"Three. I thought about them on the plane, and I've been rewriting them for two weeks. Don't argue with any of them."
"I won't," he said.
"The first one is no after." I turned around. "Not after the hearing, not after the summer, not after something else is settled. If you want something, you say it now. If you mean to do something, you do it now. The word is banned."
"No after."
"Second. You tell me what you are about to do, before you do it. Not the next day. Not a text from the car. If you decide to sell something, sign something, call your mother, or open a door, I hear it first."
