Chapter 30: The Second Question
He told me where and when, in a text, three days before.
"Saturday at dusk. The end of the pilot dock. I'm going to ask you the question I was told to ask again. Everyone will be there. If you want me to do it somewhere else, say so, and I will."
I wrote back: "Dock is fine."
Then I took the text to Posey, and she screamed into a couch cushion.
On Saturday the sky over the river went the color of peaches.
The pilot boats rocked at their moorings with their running lights on.
Twenty-three people stood along the dock in clean jackets, smelling of soap instead of diesel, with their families.
The grey-bearded dockhand had brought his wife and a camp chair.
Verity had brought a cake from her restaurant, a sheet cake with a tugboat on it that Linus had insisted upon.
Linus himself stood at the end of the dock in his yellow raincoat, the compass round his neck on a shoelace.
Posey stood beside him with her phone held up.
