Chapter 21: The Nomination

Dominik's POV

The Guild's letter came in a cream envelope, the same weight of paper they use for wedding invitations.

KRAL TABLE, it said. Nominated: Outstanding Dessert Program, Chicago Restaurant Awards.

I read it standing in the hallway of my new apartment.

It was a one-bedroom on Ashland with a radiator and a view of a brick wall.

I had waited my whole life for a letter like that.

I put it on the counter and made coffee and did not drink it.

At nine the next morning I walked into the Guild offices on the fourth floor of a building on Wabash.

The committee chair was a woman of about sixty in a green blazer, with reading glasses on a cord.

She stood to shake my hand.

"Chef Kral. We don't usually meet nominees in person. Congratulations."

"I'm here to withdraw," I said.

She sat down slowly.

"I'm sorry?"

"Kral Table's nomination. I'd like it removed."
