Chapter 12: His Name
"Thank you, Madam," Wenxin said. "I'll pack tonight."
She said it with her best smile, the one for the cameras, and she watched Madam's shoulders ease.
Beside her Haoran did not move. She felt the cold coming off him.
The guests murmured their approval. A wife patted Wenxin's arm and said what a devoted girl she was.
She stood in the light of that doorway and smiled until it hurt.
When the cars finally left, she walked out to the gate and found his black sedan waiting with the engine running.
He opened the passenger door without a word.
"I'm not going to that villa," Wenxin said, getting in.
"No."
"I only said it so she'd relax."
"I know." His hands were tight on the wheel. "You were very good."
"I've had practice at being a daughter-in-law."
He drove along the river with the windows up. Neither of them spoke until the car turned into a quiet street and stopped under a plain building with a single light in the lobby.
"This isn't the hotel," she said.
"It's mine."
He led her up in the elevator and unlocked a door that opened onto bare floors and a wall of glass.
There was almost nothing in the apartment. A couch. A table. A shelf of scripts with the spines worn white.
"I don't bring people here," he said.
She stood in the middle of the room.
"We have terms," she said, "and I'm already breaking two of them."
"Then break the rest."
"Haoran..."
He crossed the floor in three strides, and she stopped.
