Chapter 15: The Man on the Step
On the third day it rained, and a black car stopped across Nanshan Road at ten past four.
Zhe saw it through the shop window, over the open lid of a baby grand.
He had a tuning lever in one hand and a mute strip in the other.
He did not put either of them down.
The driver's door opened and Lu Wen got out and held an umbrella over the rear door.
The man who stepped out did not take it.
Hanjing crossed the road in the rain with no coat and no umbrella.
His suit was soaked through to the shoulders, and his hair hung over his forehead.
He walked straight up to the shop door, and then he stopped on the step.
Qiu came out of the back room wiping his hands on his apron.
He looked at the man on his doorstep, then at Zhe, then at the street.
Two women with shopping bags had slowed down, and the man from the noodle stall had come out to the kerb with a ladle.
Hanjing went down on his knees on the wet stone.
