Chapter 14: The Paperwork
Holt had his keys in his hand before the pies cooled.
"I'm going to see him," he said.
"You're going to sit down," Dacey said.
"Dace."
"He wants you to hit him. Joni told me about the phone."
"Joni told you when?"
"While you were scraping the pies," Dacey said. "Sit."
Holt sat, slowly, at the end of his own table.
Bear put his chin on Holt's knee to make sure he stayed.
I cut a burned pie into six pieces, because nobody had touched the dinner and I needed something to do with my hands.
"Here's what I know," Dacey said. "Saturday he's on a stage in front of his boss and every customer in this county, holding a microphone. He's going to say my name."
"And?" I said.
"And I want to be standing there when he does."
"You want to marry him on a stage?" Holt said.
"I want him to say it out loud first." She picked up a fork. "Then I want to take the microphone."
I looked at her, small and sharp in her gray coat, with flour on her cuff.
Then I took out my phone and texted Cass: Come to Holt's. Bring food. We're doing something.
She was at the door in twenty minutes with a stockpot, which was how I knew she'd been cooking angry again.
"I brought chili," she said. "I heard the word 'stage.' Who's the nurse?"
"I'm the nurse."
"Can you sew a ham?"
"I can sew a person."
"Good. We might need that." Cass looked around the table. "Okay. Tell me everything. Slowly. With the bad parts."
It took an hour.
