Chapter 9: Three Letters

I stood in the doorway of a suite I had drawn, holding a letter with my name on it.

I was very cold.

There were three envelopes in his jacket.

The same handwriting was on every one of them.

The same red stamp was on every one of them.

I took them into the sitting room.

Tobias was at the window with his phone against his ear and his back to me.

He heard the paper and turned.

His face changed when he saw what I was holding.

"I'll call you back," he said into the phone, and set it down.

"Tell me what these are," I said.

"Cora."

"Tell me. Now."

"They're letters. I wrote them to you." He took one step toward me and stopped. "Two years ago."

I heard my own voice go flat and quiet.

"You sat at the Pembroke dinner. You were the client, in the front row, with a glass in your hand. My husband stood up and took the credit for my work, and you said nothing."

"I didn't know it was your work."

"You said so yourself. You asked for me by name."

"I asked for the woman who drew the suites." He did not move. "I only had a first name. The architectural press had been told the principal was Rodrick Lowell. Nobody had told me there was a Mrs. Lowell who did the drawings."

"You asked, and he lied."

"He said you had quit and gone abroad. I believed him for about a week."

I looked down at the first letter.

"A week," I said.
