Chapter 7: Hate Me Inside

I opened the door.

Phillip stood in the porch light with his tie hanging loose and his jacket over one arm.

He did not say anything. He looked at the T-shirt, at my bare legs and at my face.

"You mocked me," I said. "On the terrace. You got me to lean in, and then you laughed."

"I know."

"Why did you come back?"

"Because I stopped," he said roughly. "I stopped because if I started I wasn't going to quit. And you'd have hated me by morning."

"I hate you now."

"Then hate me inside."

He stepped across the threshold, and I did not step back.

The door shut behind him. I heard it click.

Neither of us moved for a moment. The kitchen was dark except for the light over the stove.

"Careful, scholarship," I said. "You're enjoying this."

A sound came out of his chest that was half a laugh.

Then his hand was in my hair and his mouth was on mine.

It was not careful. It was hard and hungry, and I kissed him back with every year of it in my teeth.

I bit his lip. He groaned and backed me into the counter, and my hands went into his shirt and tore at the buttons.

"Slower," he said against my mouth. "Hallie. Slower."

"No."

"I mean it. I want to see you."

"You've had seven years to look."

"I haven't looked at all." He lifted me onto the kitchen table by the hips, and the glass of water I'd left there tipped over and rolled. "Not once. Let me."

He pulled the T-shirt over my head.

I sat on the edge of the table in nothing but my underwear with the stove light on my skin.

Phillip stared. His chest rose and fell. His hands hung at his sides, and he did not touch me yet.

"Say something," I said.

"You're beautiful." It came out rough. "I've wanted to say that to you for a long time, and I was too stupid to know what it was."

"Don't make it a speech."

"Fine."

He put his mouth on my throat and I forgot every word I knew.
