Chapter 21: Songbird
I put the card in my cardigan pocket, over my heart, where he had carried it.
Out in the dark, forty thousand people were still stamping.
"Mommy," Gus said. "Is it your turn?"
"It's my turn."
"Are you scared?"
"A little."
"Daddy was scared. His hands were like this." He held up both of his and shook them.
Colt made a noise that was half a laugh.
Then a woman's heels clicked fast across the boards behind us.
"Linnea."
Sonya had come around the back of the stage in her white suit, and her assistant was beside her with a banker's box in both arms.
The lid was marked LANTERN ARCHIVE in black pen.
I knew what was in it before she said a word.
"You'll go out there and say you're Songbird," Sonya said, low, "and I'll walk these onto the stage in front of everyone and tell them they're forgeries."
"Those are my notebooks."
"They're evidence. In my custody."
"They're mine."
"Prove it," Sonya said softly. "Prove they're not mine."
The drummer had come up out of the dark with his sticks in his belt.
He did not say anything.
He took one step and put his hand flat on the box.
Behind him came the bass player, then the guitarist, then the production manager, then three men in black shirts from the lighting crew.
They did not crowd her.
They stood in a loose line behind the box, and nobody smiled.
"Ma'am," the drummer said to the assistant. "I think that's the lady's."
The assistant looked at Sonya.
