Chapter 7: Rehearsal
The arena in Nashville was dark except for the stage, and I sat in the last row of the upper tier with my hood up.
Colt was rehearsing.
Twenty-two people stood or sat around him, the band and the sound crew and a woman with a headset and a clipboard, and every one of them was working through my songs.
I had never heard them played this loud.
The first notes of "Porch Light" came off the stage and rolled up through the empty seats, and my body knew them before my mind did.
I had written that song in four hours, in a nightgown, on the floor of a nursery.
Now a hundred speakers were carrying it to the roof.
Colt sang the first verse well.
He always had.
He had a voice that made strangers think of home, and I had never once heard him use it on a lie.
That was the worst part.
He sang the second verse and then stopped.
"Sorry," he said into the microphone. "Back up. Take it from the bridge."
The band went back.
He sang it again and stopped in the same place.
"What's the problem, Colt?" the woman with the clipboard called.
"The line's wrong," Colt said. "It's not 'the porch light burns for you.' It's 'the porch light burned for you,' past tense. She wrote it past tense. That's the whole song."
Nobody said anything.
I sat very still in the dark.
I had changed that word at three in the morning, and I had never told him.
He had heard it in the song itself, all those years, and he had understood.
He sang it again, past tense, and my eyes stung.
