The email from Hartwell came on Wednesday, at nine, while Nash was eating my toast.
We were in the wharf office, the three of us, with the lake going silver in the window.
Roan stood at his desk signing a stack of crew timesheets.
I read the email once in my head and once aloud.
"Dear Ms. Landry. The hold on the reassignment of your place stands.
"The enrollment deposit received from another applicant is pending review.
"Hartwell's regional alumni liaison will hold a dinner at the Port Alder Lakeside Club a week from Saturday.
"She will hear from both families in person, and she will make a written finding for the committee.
"Please bring any statements you wish her to consider."
I put the phone on the desk.
"A dinner," Nash said. "In a club. With a liaison who writes findings. I have never been so excited."
"It's not a win," I said.
"It's not a loss."
"It's a room with my stepmother in it."
"That's a room we can work with," Roan said, without looking up.
