Chapter 8: After Dinner

"No," Camryn said.

She stood up so fast her chair went over.

"I'm not sitting down. You paid him? You paid him to kiss me, and I thought..." Her voice broke into something high and ugly. "I thought somebody finally picked me."

"Sit down, Camryn."

"Everybody always picked her!" She flung a hand at me. "Dad, Mom, you, Tripp, Reed, everybody! I only ever wanted one thing that was mine!"

"They were mine," I said. "You took them."

"I took what you didn't want!"

She ran for the door with her hair in her face.

Reed started after her and stopped halfway across the room.

He looked back at me, a long, wretched look, and I turned my face away.

When the front door slammed, my stepmother set down her wine glass, patted her lips with a napkin, and stood.

"I'll see to her," she said. "Thank you for dinner, Mr. Draper. It's been educational."

"Sit," said the old man.

She sat.

He hadn't raised his voice once all evening.

"Landry stays," he said. "The rest of you, get out of my house."

My stepmother's face finally cracked.

I didn't wait to see the rest.

I took Roan's hand and walked out through the kitchen, past the Silent One scraping lamb into the bin.

Onto the lawn.

The night was cool.

I walked all the way to the boathouse without a word, with the notebook crushed against my ribs, and Roan walked behind me.

I got the door open.

I shut it behind us.

Then I turned around and put both hands flat on his chest and shoved him up against it.

He let me.

"I'm so angry," I said.

"I know."

"I'm so angry I can't breathe. Eleven months. I let him hold my hand, I thought he..." My voice shook, and I dragged in air. "Don't you dare be gentle with me."

His eyes went dark.

"Okay," Roan said.

I grabbed his shirt by both sides and ripped it open.

Buttons flew across the floor.

He laughed, low, startled, and I kissed him with my teeth.

It was nothing like the first night.

It was messy and hard and furious.

He kissed me back, with his hands in my hair, tilting my head to take more.
