Chapter 8: Unsigned

My mother picked up on the sixth ring.

"Rosemary? Is something wrong? It's the middle of the night."

"It's noon here, Mom. I'm fine."

"You're calling on the emergency line."

"I have a quick question, and then I'll hang up and call you properly."

I heard her sit down.

"Does Marissa have a key to the house?"

There was a pause.

"I gave it to her the first spring, after my hip," my mother said. "She was driving over twice a week with groceries. She mows the lawn, Rosemary. She's practically a daughter."

"Does she come on Sundays?"

"Every Sunday. I told you."

"Does she go through my old things?"

"She sits in your room and reads your letters aloud to me," my mother said. "I can't see the print anymore. I thought you knew that."

I closed my eyes.

"Mom, I asked you not to show them to anyone."

"She isn't anyone."

I let that go.

"Why did you tell Clayton to ask about the bathroom?" I said.

My mother was quiet for so long I thought the line had dropped.

"Because I'm tired of you carrying it by yourself," she said finally. "You drove to that hospital alone and you came home and you never told him. He should hear it from you. I wasn't going to say it for you."

"Mom."

"I only said to ask. I didn't say what."
