He Left His Pregnant Bride at the Altar novel · Chapter 1 of 24
Chapter 1: The Photo
On her wedding day Marisa watches her groom and brother leave for a minor crash, then tells three hundred guests there will be no wedding; a last text shows the bracelet she was told she lost on Nerina's wrist.
Three hundred guests were seated in St. Anthony's when my sister's photo reached my phone.
I was in the bride's room in a dress that had been let out twice, and my daughter was kicking under the lace.
Nerina had zipped me in ten minutes earlier.
She had pinned my veil, handed me a glass of water with a straw, and told me to breathe.
"You look like a movie, Mari," she said.
Then she went out to her car to fetch the something blue she had forgotten.
I was thirty-five weeks along, and I felt like a parade float.
It was Saturday, March ninth.
Ruggero had spent that date at Nerina's door every year since she was eight, and he never explained why.
When he asked me to marry him on it, he said I would have to share him for one day.
Nerina laughed and said she didn't mind at all.
Then every phone in the room buzzed.
The photo showed a silver sedan with its front bumper folded against a lamppost.
The hazard lights were on, and the caption read, "Please come. I'm so scared."
It was Nerina's number.
I am a trauma surgeon, so I looked at it the way I look at everything.
There was no blood on the glass, and the airbag hadn't gone off.
Then Ruggero came through the door in his black suit, with my brother Tiberio right behind him.
"Nerina's been in a crash," Ruggero said.
He pressed his mouth to my forehead.
"Stay here. I'll be twenty minutes."
"Ruggero, the car isn't even smoking."
"She's alone, Mari."
Then both of them were gone, and the door was still swinging.
I waited, with one hand on my stomach and the other on the back of a chair.
Twenty minutes later, one of Ruggero's men knocked on the door.
"It's nothing, Doctor. A minor collision. Nobody's hurt."
My shoulders lowered.
"Then they'll come back now."
He rubbed the back of his neck.
"The boss says she's having a panic attack. He says neither of them can leave her."
I called Ruggero myself.
He answered on the first ring, and I heard wind and a siren behind him.
"Marisa. I'm sorry. Give me a few hours."
"A few hours."
"The priest can wait. The families can wait. Nothing happens if the wedding slips till tonight."
"There are three hundred people in that church."
"Mari." His voice went soft, the way it did when he wanted something.
"You've always been the reasonable one. Don't make me leave her like this."
For ten years I had been reasonable.
I had been reasonable when he missed my father's birthday, and my graduation dinner, and our first ultrasound.
I had stitched his men on my kitchen table at three in the morning and told him it was fine.
I looked down at my belly.
I had already picked her name, and it was Rosa.
"No," I said.
"What?"
"Not this time."
I hung up.
Then I opened my contacts and called a number I had saved in January and never used.
"Lakeshore General, director's office."
"This is Dr. Marisa Tedesco," I said.
"Tell him I'll take the trauma chief post. Ten years. I'll sign whatever he sends."
I set the phone down and picked up my train in both fists.
I walked into the church by the side door.
The organ stopped.
Three hundred heads turned.
My father stood up in the front pew with his hand lifted for quiet.
"Marisa," he said, low and steady, "be reasonable."
Everyone in that church had said it to me at least once.
I faced the aisle.
"There is no wedding today," I said, loud enough to reach the back wall.
"The groom left to hold my sister's hand. I'm not waiting for him to come back."
My father said my name again, but I was already walking.
So I stepped out.
The white limousine was idling at the curb, and the driver opened the door without a word.
I sat inside with rain starting on the glass.
My phone lit up in my lap.
It was another photo from Nerina.
It showed Ruggero's jacket around her shoulders on a wet sidewalk, and his hand holding hers.
On her wrist was his mother's gold bracelet.
His mother had put it on me a month ago at our engagement dinner.
Two weeks later it was gone, and Ruggero had told me I must have lost it.
