I stood in the lot and watched his truck pull out onto the beach road.
Brandi waved at me through the window.
Luke came back over.
"What did he want?"
"He told me to check my signature."
"On what?"
"A second mortgage I've never heard of."
Luke was quiet a moment.
"You have a lawyer?"
"No."
"You do now."
He took out his phone.
"Bev Tolliver. She did my late wife's estate. She eats men like him for breakfast and asks for more grits."
Bev Tolliver's office was over a bank on Thirteenth Street.
She was sixty-one, small and silver-haired, with red reading glasses and a voice like a church organ.
She saw me the next morning at eight.
She listened to all of it without interrupting.
The cake. The key. The ninety-two thousand dollars.
Then she pulled up the county land records on her screen.
"Here's your first mortgage. You and Glenn both signed. Paid down to about ninety thousand."
