Chapter 12: Madam Chair

Daphne's letter reached the Fund early on Tuesday morning, addressed to every member of the board.

My assistant printed it and laid it in front of me without a word.

Arthur read it standing at my window with his glasses low on his nose.

"Dear members of the search committee," he read. "I write as Dr. Ellery's oldest friend and out of deep concern."

"Eight years ago Dr. Ellery drove exhausted and caused a crash that killed my brother. He has never disclosed it.

"He has since shown a pattern of instability toward those closest to him. He is currently involved with a woman who has no standing and appears to be exploiting his position."

He lowered the page.

"That's you, Madam Chair. The woman with no standing."

"She's good," I said. "She's very good."

"It has no dates, no report, and no case number. It's an opinion with a letterhead."

He folded the letter.

"It will still be read by five people tomorrow."

"I'm recused."

"You are. You will sit at that table and say nothing, and he will stand in front of strangers with this hanging over him."

I looked at the portrait of my grandmother.

"Is that fair?" I asked.

"No," said Arthur. "It's the process."
