He Left Me in the Snow for Her Labor, So I Delivered It novel · Chapter 15 of 24

Chapter 15: Norwood Avenue

The truck followed me all the way to Norwood Avenue at five miles an hour.

It took forty minutes to walk two miles in the snow.

When I reached my own front steps, I turned around for the first time, and Roderick lowered his window.

He didn't say anything.

I stood there with the snow melting down my collar, and I nodded to him once.

He raised the window and drove away.

The house was a 1920s brick two-story with a deep porch and a green door, and I had picked the door color myself.

I unlocked it and went in and stood in the hall with my coat still on.

Eight years I had lived in this house, and it smelled of coffee and Bram's cologne.

His gray scarf hung on the hook by the stairs.

I took a breath through my teeth, and then I walked to the kitchen and started making calls.

The locksmith picked up on the second ring.

"Emergency, Sunday morning," I said. "Front door, back door, the basement bulkhead. I'll pay double. I need it within the hour."
