Chapter 21: We Need to Talk
"What I wanted," I said, "was for you to say no to him in March."
My father opened his mouth.
Nothing came out.
He looked at the crew one more time.
None of them did.
He walked back to the black car.
The driver held the door. He got in without looking at the Heron's empty shed.
The car backed all the way up the dead end, because it couldn't turn around.
I went upstairs and lay on the bed with my shoes on.
The dog came up and lay across my feet.
I didn't sleep.
Around three I got up and made a copy of the thumb drive on Troy's laptop.
Then another, on a card from my camera bag.
I put the card in the envelope pocket of my camera bag, next to my mother's letter.
In the morning I walked the diner owner's dress back to her, pressed and on its hanger.
The diner was full for the lunch rush.
Shrimpers at the counter. Two women from the church. A table of county road workers in orange vests.
The owner took the garment bag from me and hung it on a hook behind the register.
