Chapter 24: Then Do It
Kendra took the microphone out of her mother's hand.
Nobody stopped her.
"She called at one in the morning," she said. "I was asleep. I'd been up for two days."
"Kendra," her mother said.
"She was on the balcony. She said she'd done it a hundred times, and this time she meant it, and I should come."
Her voice was flat now.
The soft, careful tone she wore for rooms was gone.
"I'd gone that week. And the week before. And the week before that. I had a job, Mother. I had an exam on Monday. I had six years of Ansley standing on the edge of things."
"Stop," Ansley's mother whispered.
"You asked what she said. Here it is."
She looked out at the dark ballroom, and four hundred people held perfectly still.
"She said, 'If you don't come, I'm going to jump, and it will be your fault.'"
"And I said, 'Then do it. I'm done.'"
Nobody breathed.
"I said it, and I hung up. I turned the phone off, and I got back into bed."
A woman in the third row made a small, broken noise.
"I woke at seven, and the police were at my door."
She swayed.
"Ansley's letter was in her lobby mailbox, in an envelope with my name on it. I read it that morning. It had two names in it. Vaughn's and hers."
She pointed at me without looking.
"And I thought, if that's what she says, then it isn't mine. Let it be theirs."
"So you let them carry it," said Ansley's mother, and she said it very quietly.
"It was only supposed to be for a week."
