Chapter 30: The Brass Pin
Four black cars were parked nose to tail along my grandmother's gravel road.
Vaughn stood on the porch in yesterday's shirt, with the bedroll still behind him and his hair flat on one side.
I stood next to him in his jacket, and I had not had time to think.
The oldest partner from the boardroom was walking up the path in polished city shoes.
He stepped around a puddle, and then into another one.
"Good morning, Vaughn," he said.
"Good morning."
"Ms. Haskell."
"You're in my yard," I said.
"I apologize. We tried to call."
"I turned the phone off," Vaughn said.
"I see that."
Behind him, the other three partners stood by the cars with their hands folded.
Across the road, my neighbor had come out onto his porch in his undershirt with a coffee and no shame at all.
The partner cleared his throat.
"The stake you sold went to a buyer who is breaking the company into pieces," he said. "Our two largest contracts are frozen. The press does not like us, and the press does not like the board that voted you out in a week when you did the decent thing."
"You voted for it," Vaughn said.
"Nine of us did. We were wrong."
He took a small velvet box from his pocket and held it out.
"The chair is yours. At a salary double what you drew. You choose the vice-chairs. You may say whatever you like to the papers, including that we were cowards."
Vaughn looked at the box, and did not take it.
"We were hoping," the partner went on, "that Ms. Haskell and the boy might come to the announcement. A photograph. Only to show that the family and the firm are reconciled."
