Chapter 6: The Sister

They came up the lane at nine the next morning.

A small gray hatchback, loaded to the roof with boxes, a lamp tied to the luggage rack, and a brown mutt barking in the back seat.

I was standing in the hayfield with Eli and Hank, pacing out where the trench would go.

Eli had brought a surveyor's wheel and a roll of orange tape from the county shop.

Hank was telling a long story about a bull and a fence, and none of us was listening.

"Somebody's lost," Hank said.

The hatchback stopped at the cattle guard.

Shelby Dunning got out, and then she opened the back door and lifted out a little boy.

He was about six, with a cowlick, a gap where his front teeth should have been, and pale gray eyes.

The mutt jumped out after him and ran in circles.

"Lena." Shelby came up the lane with the boy's hand in hers. Her eyes were red. "Please. I know how this looks."

"It looks like a car full of boxes," I said.

"Brent told us we could stay here. He said the farm was going to be ours, and that you'd signed, and I didn't know." Her voice cracked. "I put every dollar I had into the deposit. We've got nowhere."

Eli had stopped pacing and was standing a few yards away with the wheel in his hand.

Hank had folded his arms.

I looked at the suitcases through the back window, and I looked at the boy.
