Chapter 14: The Apartment Key

The board chair did not hold the meeting in a boardroom. He held it in the lobby, under the big screen, in front of four hundred staff.

"Everyone who was here for the video," he said into the microphone, "stays for this."

Nobody left.

I stood at the side of the stage with Nolan, and my hands were steady.

Mallory came down the stairs in a pale pink suit and a pearl necklace.

She saw the crowd and stopped on the third step. Her big blue eyes filled.

"Mr. Corbin told me there was a meeting about my promotion," she said.

"There is a meeting," said the board chair. "Come up."

She came up. She stood on the stage with her hands clasped.

Behind her, the screen lit with a bank statement.

"On the third of last month," the chair said, "four hundred thousand dollars left this company. It went to a firm called Quince Consulting. The firm has one employee."

Mallory's face did not change.

"That's a mistake."

"It is a firm registered in your name, to your apartment address."

"Preston told me to do it." Her voice dropped soft and small. "He said it was a bonus. I was frightened. I've always done what I'm told."

"Then who approved the wire?"

"He did."

"His approval code was in use that night. He was on an airplane to Denver." The chair turned a page. "The code was in your desk drawer, on a yellow note."

Someone in the crowd made a low sound.

Mallory looked at me.

I had not planned to speak. I stepped up to the microphone anyway.

"Mallory," I said. "Last week, you stood in my kitchen in my robe and told me what my husband said about me."
