Chapter 18: Co-Chair

Leah's POV

"No," I said.

Preston's face went still.

"One minute," he said. "Leah. One."

"You can have it here. With the door open and every director listening."

"It's private."

"You said that about the garage."

Someone at the table coughed to cover a laugh.

Preston looked around the room at nine directors, his lawyer, his mother and his brother.

He had spent forty-one years choosing who could see him. Now he had no one left to choose.

"Fine," he said. "Here."

He turned to face me.

"I loved you," he said.

"You loved having me."

"That isn't fair."

"Tell me the date of our anniversary."

"The fourteenth of June."

"Tell me my father's name."

He opened his mouth.

I waited.

"Walter," he said. "Walter Sutherland."

"His name was Frank."

The room went silent.

Preston's lawyer put a hand over his own eyes.

"He died in the ICU eleven years ago," I said. "Ten years of marriage, and you never once asked his name. You called him a good man at our wedding and could not say which one."

"Leah..."

"That's your minute," I said. "Sign."

The board chair slid the resignation across the table.
