Chapter 8: You Never Called
I woke up on the rug under a wool blanket with the sun in my eyes.
Nolan was at the stove, barefoot, in last night's jeans, turning eggs in an iron pan.
His shirt lay on the floor where I had thrown it.
I sat up and held the blanket to my chest.
"You said one night," he said without turning around. "I'm only making breakfast. It doesn't count."
"It counts if I eat it."
"Then eat slowly."
I nearly smiled.
I took the plate he handed me. The eggs were good. The coffee was strong.
Outside, the lake had gone flat and silver after the storm.
We ate in silence for a while. It was not comfortable.
I had told myself I would not ask. I had made the rule myself.
But the question had been sitting in my chest for ten years, and the night before had pulled it right to the surface.
"You never called," I said.
He put down his fork.
"Leah. We said no questions."
"It isn't a question. It's a fact." I set my plate on the table. "I gave you my number at the station. I waited three hours. In ten years you never called, you never wrote, and you never once checked whether I was alive."
His face tightened.
"You were married to my brother."
"I wasn't married to anyone that night. I was twenty-six and sitting on a bench in a yellow raincoat."
"I know what you were."
"Then why didn't you come and find me?"
"Because eight months later I opened the Tribune and saw your wedding photo," he said.
His voice was very quiet.
"You were smiling. You were in white. My brother had his arm around your waist."
