Chapter 10: The Tent

The chair of the Moot recognised the heir of the Fen and set the reading for the third night.

Then he banged his staff, and two hundred wolves stood up talking at once.

I walked out into the dark and did not look back.

Hetta found me by the lake and put a blanket around my shoulders.

"He spoke for you," she said.

"I know."

"I'm only saying it."

"I know, Hetta."

"Go and thank him, then," she said. "Or go and do something else. I'm too old to tell the difference."

I stood by the water for a long time.

Then I walked to the biggest tent on the shore, the one with the grey Kestrel banner, and pushed the flap aside without knocking.

Corwin was alone, sitting on the edge of a camp cot with his coat off and his elbows on his knees.

He looked up and went still.

"I told Maud to go to her own tent," he said.

"Your Luna is waiting, Alpha."

I said it the way I had said it at the border stone.

He stood slowly.

"I have thought about that sentence every night for a week," he said. "She isn't my Luna. She never will be. Say it again if you want. I'll answer it properly this time."

"I didn't come to talk."

"Then why did you come?"

"You owe me," I said. "You spoke for me in front of the Moot, and I am not grateful for it. I am collecting."

His throat moved.

"What do you want?"

I unhooked my cloak and let it drop.

"Kneel," I said.

He knelt.

He did it at once, on the packed floor of the tent, with his eyes lifted to my face and not one word of argument.

I pulled my dress up and over my head.

I stood in front of him in only my shift and he stared at me with his mouth slightly open.
