Chapter 12: The Door

Corwin came up out of the river with the page already folded inside his coat.

He wiped his face and stood in front of me and said, very low, "Say nothing. Let him talk."

I nodded, scared of how many wolves were coming.

Oswin reined in at the water's edge and swung off his grey horse.

He took one look at Hetta in the ferryman's arms and his face fell.

"Moon above. Who did this?"

"Ask your man in the grey cloak," Hetta said.

"A deserter, I'd think. We've had one loose since the Fen." Oswin knelt by her, gentle, and pushed a lock of white hair from her wound. "Let me carry her to the healers' tent. Corwin, the Moot sits again at noon and the chair is asking for you."

"We'll bring her ourselves," Corwin said.

"Of course."

Oswin stood and dusted his knees.

"I only thought," he said, "it might be wise to ride in together. For appearances."

Corwin looked at him for a long moment.

"Together," he said.

We went in a line along the lake road, with Hetta in the cart again and forty Kestrel wolves in a loose ring around us.

Nobody spoke.

I walked beside the wheel with my hand on Hetta's shoulder and counted the iron heels behind us.

Oswin rode at Corwin's elbow and chatted about the weather.

At the edge of the Moot's central field, with every pack's banner flying and a hundred wolves breakfasting on the grass, he raised his hand and the ring closed.

Eight men stepped in front of us.

The cart stopped.

Wolves turned their heads from the cookfires and started to rise.
