Chapter 15: Cade Alone
I went down to the yard in my grandfather's flannel robe, with Benedict one step behind me.
Cade stood by his truck with the box on the hood.
He had not slept.
His suit was creased, and he had a cut on his lip.
"Hallie," he said. "Thank God."
"How did you find this place?"
"You brought me here the first summer. You showed me the dock." His voice cracked. "I drove around all night and I thought, she'd go to him, or she'd go here."
"And you picked here."
"I knew you'd be alone."
Benedict said nothing behind me.
Cade looked past me at him, and his mouth twisted.
"Is he going to stand there?"
"He's going to stand there," I said. "Say what you came to say."
Cade took a breath.
"I was a fool," he said. "I let Brooke run everything. I was weak, and I know it. But I'm done with her."
"Since when?"
"Since last night. She screamed at me in the parking lot, and she said, fine, maybe the baby isn't yours."
I waited.
"I was in Denver for the whole of March," he said. "The dates don't line up. It can't be mine. She was seeing someone else the entire time."
He held it out to me, sure I would be glad to hear it.
"She lied to me, Hallie. She played us both. We're the same."
"We are not the same."
"We both got hurt."
"You were in the video," I said. "You were at the head of the table. I was in a plastic chair."
His face crumpled.
"I made a mistake."
"Which one? The passport? The airport? The three years?"
