Chapter 18: Benedict's Office

The Chatsworth building took up eleven floors, and Benedict's office sat at the top of them.

Brooke was already on the executive floor when we stepped out of the elevator.

She stood in the middle of the open office with her tablet raised over her head.

Sixty people had stopped typing to watch her.

"Mr. Chatsworth," she said brightly. "I think you'll want to see this before your wife makes a fool of you."

Benedict stopped walking.

"Ms. Tilden, you are not on my floor."

"I'm a concerned friend of the family."

"You are leaving."

"Let me show you one thing," she said. "Then I'll go, and I'll never speak to either of you again."

His assistant looked at him from across the room.

Benedict looked at me.

I gave him the smallest nod.

"Play it," he said.

Brooke walked to the glass conference wall, plugged her tablet into the screen, and tapped it.

The video filled the whole glass wall.

It was a hotel hallway, with a camera low in a corner and bad light.

A woman in a red dress stood against a wall, kissing a man in a long dark coat.

She had my hair, and my jaw, and my face.

Someone gasped.

The woman in the video put her arms around the man's neck and laughed.

It was my laugh, or something close.

"Monday night," Brooke said sweetly. "While you were at the foundation dinner, Mr. Chatsworth. She calls the man an old friend."

The whole floor looked at Benedict.

He did not move.

He looked at the screen with his face quite empty, and his hand hung at his side.

I felt every person in the room waiting for him to flinch.

"Benedict," Brooke said softly. "I'm so sorry."
