Chapter 5: Sunday

The apartment door was already open when I got off the elevator.

I had lived there three years, and I stood in the hall like a visitor.

Inside, there were balloons.

A banner on the wall said WELCOME BACK HALLIE in blue letters, and under it the four friends sat on the couch with their phones propped on the coffee table.

Cade stood in the middle of the room with his arms spread.

"There she is," he said. "Come in, babe. We're all friends here."

"I came for the letters and the watch," I said.

"And you'll get them. First, a little apology."

I looked at the phones.

Every one of them had a red dot lit.

"To who?" I asked.

"To everyone you embarrassed," Cade said. "Me. My mom. Brooke."

Brooke came out of the kitchen with a glass in her hand.

She was wearing a yellow sundress I had never seen, and on her wrist was a man's steel watch with a cracked brown strap.

My grandfather's watch.

It hung loose on her arm, and the face was still stopped at ten past four.

"Take it off," I said.

"Oh, this?" Brooke held up her wrist. "Cade gave it to me for my birthday. It was just sitting in a drawer, Hallie. You never wore it."

"You told me it was in your safe," I said to Cade.

"I said what you needed to hear."

He said it cheerfully, and the friends laughed, a little unsurely.

"Say sorry, and I'll tell her to give it back," Cade said. "On camera. Say you were dramatic and you're sorry. Then we do the wedding on Saturday like we planned, and everyone forgets this."
