He Let Her Wear His Shirt, So I Froze the Club's Money novel · Chapter 1 of 24
Chapter 1: The Shirt
Tawny walks into the club cookout wearing Hallie's husband's shirt. Hallie takes off her ring, reads a hotel receipt aloud and freezes the accounts, and the bank says a pending wire went to Tawny with Hallie's own code.
Tawny Pratt walked into the club cookout wearing my husband's shirt, and eighty people stopped chewing.
It was his grey work shirt with the burn hole in the left cuff.
I had patched that cuff myself, three winters ago, at our kitchen table.
She had it knotted at her waist and the sleeves pushed up.
She walked straight across the yard and stood at Boone's shoulder.
Boone was the club's vice president, my husband of nine years, and the only man I had ever seen walk into a room and make it go quiet.
Now he was the one who went quiet.
He looked at the grill. He looked at the dirt. He did not look at me.
I was standing at the folding table by the potato salad with a serving spoon in my hand.
The club's cook stood next to me, holding a tray of buns, and she said very softly, "Hallie, honey, put the spoon down."
I put the spoon down.
That morning I had found a hotel receipt in the garage accounts.
It was folded into a pile of parts invoices, and I had told myself it was a mistake.
At nine-fifteen, Boone had texted me: Tawny's just helping Mags today, don't read into it.
I hadn't answered.
Mags, the cook, had not asked Tawny to help with anything. Mags was holding the buns.
Gus Haldane came across the yard with a paper plate in each hand.
He was the club's president, sixty-one years old, with reading glasses on a cord around his neck and a voice that never rose.
He had held my hand at my wedding and hired me to keep these books when I was twenty-four.
"There she is," Gus said, and handed me a plate. "Sit, honey. Eat something."
"Gus, that's his shirt."
"I know it." He patted my arm. "Tawny's been a big help to us since March. I brought her on myself and I pay her out of the bar till, so she's no trouble to your payroll. Don't let a shirt spoil the day."
He said it kindly, and everyone could hear him.
Tawny looked at me over Boone's shoulder.
She was twenty-six, small and quick, with bleached hair and dark roots.
She did not smile.
I thought about the receipt in my back pocket.
I took it out and unfolded it.
The yard was so quiet that I could hear the grill ticking.
"Boone," I said. "The Cimarron Inn in Tulsa. Room 214."
He finally looked at me.
"Hallie, not here."
"Eleven Tuesdays since March," I said. "Charged to the club card and coded as equipment."
A prospect near the cooler put his beer down.
"Two hundred and twelve dollars a night," I said. "You have been renting a room with club money, and you let me think you were at a Raven meet."
Boone took one step toward me.
"Hal."
"Is she in the room when you come home?"
Nobody breathed.
"Three times," Boone said. "It was three times."
"That's not what the receipt says."
Tawny put her hand flat on his arm, and he let her.
That did it.
I was not going to cry in front of eighty people, and I was not going to throw a plate.
I looked down at my left hand.
I turned the ring until it came off, and the skin underneath was white and dented.
I set it down on the lid of the cooler.
It made a small click on the plastic.
"I'm done," I said.
Gus's face changed for the first time. "Hallie. Sit down and we'll talk about this in my office."
"Gus, you can talk to the bank."
I took out my phone.
I had the signer's number saved under the club's name, because I was the one who called it every Friday.
I walked to the edge of the yard, where the gravel met the grass, and put the phone to my ear.
Behind me, I heard Gus say, "Boone, go after her," and I heard my husband not move.
The bank manager picked up on the second ring.
"Gallows Road operating," I said. "This is Hallie Mercer, managing member. I want a hold on every transfer, starting now."
"Mrs. Mercer, is there a problem?"
"Yes."
"I can place it right away." Keys clicked. "I'll need your verbal passcode."
I gave it to him.
"Done," he said. "The hold is on. And you caught it just in time, because I'm showing a pending wire on this account that hasn't released yet."
I turned and looked back at the yard.
Boone was watching me from the middle of it with his hands open at his sides.
"What wire?" I said.
"Eighteen thousand, four hundred dollars, to a Tawny Pratt. Described as equipment lease." The manager hesitated. "It was approved at nine-fourteen this morning with your approval code."
I had not approved anything at nine-fourteen.
I had been standing in the garage with a receipt in my hand.
There were only two people who had my approval code, and one of them was me.
The other one was across the yard, and he was still looking at my bare hand.
