Chapter 15: The Thursday Phone

I didn't let her in the house.

Tawny stood at the bottom of the porch steps in the yellow light with her duffel at her feet, and I stayed at the top.

"You left in my flatbed," I said.

"I know."

"You left at dawn with a key on the table. You walk back up my road at dusk with a split lip and a bag, and you expect me to open the door."

"I don't expect anything." Her chin shook. "I took it to Rook's compound. I wanted to look him in the eye and tell him I was done. He hit me instead."

Boone went down the steps past me.

He crouched at the flatbed's rear bumper without a word, and ran his hand along the underside.

"Dump the bag," I told Tawny.

She unzipped it and tipped it out on the gravel.

A hoodie, a phone charger, a toothbrush.

Nine bundles of cash in rubber bands.

I came down one step.

"Where did that come from?"

"The Thursdays." Her mouth twisted. "Gus pays on Thursdays, from the Tin Cup till. I never spent any of it, I swear. It's all there. Nine thousand."

"Why bring it?"

"Because it's his money." She looked up at me. "And because you'll want it counted."

I almost laughed.

Of all the people in the world, she had read me right.

"Found it," Boone said from under the truck.

He came out with a black plastic box the size of a deck of cards, with a magnet on one side and a small green light.

"That's been on your flatbed since March," he said, "or since Saturday. Either way, he knows where it's been."

"He knows it's here," I said.

"Then he knows she's here."

Tawny hugged herself.

"I didn't know," she whispered. "I swear to God, I didn't."

I believed her, and I disliked it.
