Chapter 21: Rook
Rook walked across the yard with his gloves in one hand.
Eighty Gallows Road members watched him come, and not one of them reached for anything.
He stopped at the foot of the porch steps and looked at the folder in Gus's hand.
"Let me see it," he said.
Gus did not move.
Boone took the folder from him, gently, and passed it down.
Rook turned the page over in his fingers.
"That's a good copy of my name," he said. "The R is wrong. I make it with a hook."
He tore the page in half, and then in half again.
"I didn't sign this," he told the yard. "I want that said before I say the rest."
"Say it," called the welder.
Rook took a long breath.
"Two years ago I wanted the Tulsa tow contracts, and I couldn't get them honestly. Gus Haldane got in touch with me. He said he could deliver them for cash, and Gallows Road would never know."
A rumble ran through the crowd.
"I paid him two hundred thousand for the first nineteen," Rook said. "Thirty-one thousand a month after that. I knew they weren't his to sell, and I bought them anyway. That's on me, and I'll say it to any judge in the state."
"Rook," Gus said hoarsely.
"Shut up, old man."
Rook reached into his vest and pulled out a bundle of papers in a rubber band.
He walked it up to Hallie and put it in her hands.
"Every receipt," he said. "Every wire, every date. Take it to whoever you like. I'd sooner go down for what I bought than for what he's set up."
