Chapter 4: Thursday Nights
The Tin Cup opened at four, and by three-thirty Mags had the kitchen smelling of onions and bleach.
I came in through the back with my laptop under my arm and set it on the steel counter next to her cutting board.
"Meadow Pines Care," I said. "Twenty-one hundred a month for four years. Do you know it?"
Mags put down her knife.
She wiped her hands on her apron one finger at a time.
"Shut the door, honey."
I shut it.
"It's a nursing home outside Tecumseh," she said. "Gus's aunt has been in it since her stroke. Gus pays it out of the club."
"He pays it out of the club without telling the bookkeeper."
"He told me it was a favor from Boone." Mags looked at the floor. "I didn't believe him. I didn't ask, either."
I sat down on an upturned milk crate because my legs wanted me to.
Four years of money, and the man who had signed my wedding certificate as a witness had walked it past me every month.
"Mags," I said. "When did you stop trusting him?"
"I never said I did."
"You've known something."
She pulled a stool over and sat across from me, close enough that our knees touched.
She was fifty-eight, and her husband had been one of the founders, and she had fed this club through two funerals and one prison term.
"Tawny," Mags said. "Gus brought her in the second week of March. He walked her into my kitchen and said she needed work and I should put her on the bar, Tuesday through Thursday."
