Chapter 7: The Patch on the Table

Boone's POV

I left Hallie's kitchen at three in the morning with her voice still in my ears.

"Put it back on the table and go," she had said. "Don't touch me on your way out."

I hadn't touched her.

It had taken everything I had.

I slept two hours on the bunk in the clubhouse back office with my boots on.

At eight-fifty I walked into church with no box in my hands and a sick feeling I had not had since I was nineteen.

Gus was already at the head of the table.

He had his glasses on, and he smiled at me, as he had for seventeen years.

He had taught me how to run a room, and I had taught myself how to be afraid of what he knew about me.

"Boone," he said. "Sit."

I sat.

The room filled up. Thirteen men, as always, without Hallie this time, because the audit vote had been about money and this meeting was about the club.

Gus waited until the door closed.

"Where's the box?" he asked, mildly.

"Hallie has it."

"I see."

He folded his hands.

"I told you to bring it to me."

"I know what you told me."

A man down the table shifted in his chair, and nobody spoke.

Gus nodded slowly.

"Son," he said, "I'm sixty-one years old."

"I know how old you are, Gus."

"Next spring I mean to step down. The club needs a president who can hold it together when the Ravens come, and you're the one I trained." He leaned forward. "The seat is yours, Boone. I'll put it to the table myself."

I wanted that seat. I wanted nothing to do with how he was offering it.
