Chapter 23: The Last Haught
Slade walked to the center of the hall and stood where Peyton had stood.
He had no notes, and he did not look at the dais.
He looked up at the galleries, at the Cedar Ridge wolves in the left rows and the Mesquite wolves on the right.
"I am Slade Haught," he said. "My father was Alpha before me, and his father before him. Cedar Ridge has had a Haught in its seat for nine generations."
His voice carried to the back wall.
"My father had a daughter he never knew, and I never knew her either. She was twenty-two, and I could have saved her with a single operation. I didn't, because I was too busy to listen."
Nobody moved.
"I held Nessa Quinlan to a contract for three years and called it order. I let a woman keep the pack's money in her own hands because it was easier than checking. That is not a mistake. That is how I lived."
He took a ring off his right hand.
It was heavy and old, with a wolf's head cut into the stone.
He set it on the stone podium in front of the chair.
"This is the seat's ring. I resign it. I ask the council to witness that I am the last Haught to hold it, and that the seat of Cedar Ridge will never again pass by blood."
The silver-haired elder rose from the Cedar Ridge rows.
"Slade, you have no heir. The seat has to go somewhere."
"It goes to the pack. Let them vote. Let them pick the wolf they trust, with an open ledger and a second signature on every account over two hundred dollars."
