Chapter 6: Live in the Waiting Room
Every head in the waiting room turned toward Sheldon.
Colter stopped walking.
He put both hands where Sheldon could see them.
"Mr. Eccleston," he said. "I'd lower my voice. This is a NICU."
"You were inside my house."
"Your wife let me in."
"With twenty-four cans of formula I didn't buy." Sheldon stepped closer. "Who are you sleeping with my wife for, a donor list?"
"I met your wife on Wednesday," Colter said. "I met your daughter the same day. She grabbed my finger."
"You will not say that child's name."
"I haven't said it. I don't know it. The sign on her box still says baby girl."
That landed, because it was true.
Sheldon had not found a name he liked for her, and I had not been allowed to choose one.
I pressed the clip of the pen in my pocket twice.
"I'm calling security," Sheldon said.
"Please do," said the charge nurse, who had come up silently beside the desk. "The unit has a rule about shouting."
The elevator doors opened.
Brooke walked out of it in white sneakers with her phone held up in front of her face.
"Hi, everyone," she said to the screen. "I'm at the hospital with my brother. My niece is in the NICU, and honestly, it's been a crazy night. Say a prayer."
She turned the phone.
"And here's Annabel, and some man she's brought in."
A red counter in the corner of her screen read eleven hundred watching.
I looked at the families in the waiting room.
A man in work boots, holding a paper coffee cup with both hands.
A girl no older than eighteen, rocking a car seat with no baby in it.
A grandmother with her rosary tight in her lap.
