Chapter 15: What Neil Promised Her
Kirsten scrambled up off the wet grass.
"Penelope, please. I didn't come for you."
"You're kneeling on my father."
"I know."
"Get off his grave."
She stepped backward onto the gravel, and her satin hem was black with mud.
Her face had no gentleness left in it, only fear.
"Neil left me at the hotel," she said. "He told me to get lost and not to answer my phone. Marjorie said I'd be the one to take the blame."
"Good."
"I didn't have anywhere to go."
"So you came here."
"Nobody here would scream at me."
"I might."
"I know."
I held up the yellow slip in the lamplight.
"Is that your handwriting?"
She looked at it for a long time.
"The charge nurse made me print my name," she said.
"So it's yours."
"Yes."
My throat closed.
I took out my phone, thumbed the recording on and held it between us.
"I'm recording this."
Kirsten stared at the little red dot.
"Good," she said.
"Say it from the start."
She drew a ragged breath.
"I was twenty," she said. "I'd been Neil's secretary for four months, and I thought he loved me."
"He was engaged to me."
"He told me you were a business arrangement. He said your father's money kept the company alive and he'd be free as soon as it didn't."
"And then?"
"Your father found the books." She wiped her face. "Neil had been moving money out of Garner Group into a shell account. Your father told Neil he would pull the guarantee in the morning and take the matter to the bank."
"My father was going to ruin him."
"He was going to expose him. That's worse."
