Chapter 15: Every Door
Seo-jun reached the sealed wing with four guards in front of him and his brother's order in their mouths.
"Nobody passes," said the captain. "Prince Jae-won's word."
"Prince Jae-won is not the heir."
"Highness, the King is ill. The order is for the King's safety."
"My husband is inside."
"I have my orders."
Seo-jun had stood in front of men like this all his life and said "of course" and gone away.
He felt the old habit rise in him, polite and soft.
Then he thought of Min-jun against the wall, saying *you never fought for me*.
"Captain," he said, and his voice filled the corridor. "I am the Southern King's son by his queen. My mother is in the east tower and she will hear this. Open that door, or tell her to her face that you laid hands on her only heir."
The captain's jaw worked.
Behind him, the door opened from inside, and Min-jun stepped out with blood on his cuff.
"It's not mine," he said, before Seo-jun could speak. "It's your father's. He's alive. He's asked for you."
The guards stood aside.
They did not look at each other.
Seo-jun went in and knelt by the bed, and the old man took his hand and talked for a long time in a whisper.
Seo-jun listened to all of it.
When he came out, his eyes were dry and his hands were not steady.
Min-jun was waiting in the corridor, leaning on the wall with one hand pressed low on his stomach.
"You're pale," Seo-jun said.
"I'm fine."
"You're carrying a child, and you stood behind a screen while my brother poured poison for our father."
"Our child. Yes."
"Our child." Seo-jun said it again, slowly, and something in his chest turned over and settled.
