Chapter 17: The Letters in the Saddlebag
Yul came into the guest suite at noon with straw in his hair and a leather satchel under his arm.
"Papa. Papa, look what I found."
Min-jun was sitting on the edge of the bed with a cup of ginger water, trying not to look as green as he felt.
Seo-jun stood at the window with his arms folded, and had not let him out of the room since the lake.
"Where did you get that, Yul?"
"In the stable. Under Ren's saddle." Yul put the satchel on the bed. "Grandmother let me feed the bay. He ate my apple, and then I saw the bag, and it smelled funny."
"Funny how?"
"Like the cellar."
Min-jun took the satchel and undid the strap.
Inside, wrapped in oiled cloth, lay a stack of folded letters tied with a plain cord.
Each of them was sealed in red wax.
Each seal was a wolf with plum blossoms.
Seo-jun came across the room and stood very still beside him.
"Yul, go and ask Grandmother for a honey cake," he said. "A big one. Tell her I said you could have two."
"Two?"
"Two."
Yul left at a run.
Min-jun broke the first seal with his thumbnail.
The hand inside was neat and square, the hand of a man who had written the Southern King's letters for ten years.
It said the northern prince's convoy would leave at the new moon, and that the carriage was to be Jae-won's gift.
It said the payment was half a bag now and the rest on the day the heirs of both kingdoms were dead.
The second letter named the pass.
