Drita's POV

Eighty people sat down to lamb on Boston Road on the last Saturday in February, and not one of them was eating.

It was the same hall.

The same long table ran down the middle with the same white cloth, and Ardian's photograph stood at the head beside a new candle.

I wore the red wool coat and a black dress, and no scarf.

Luan walked in beside me.

At the double doors his hand settled on the small of my back, broad and warm through the wool, and stayed there the whole length of the hall.

Nobody looked at the floor.

Lule sat at Zef's elbow in her black cardigan.

The old man sat at the head with the blanket on his knees, thin and gray, the silver cane against the table.

Ermal sat on his right, in the leather jacket, with a rib in his hand.

"Daughter," Ermal said, loud, before I had reached my chair. "The year is nearly out."

"Until midnight," I said.

"Until midnight." He smiled. "And then the house keeps its widow."

I did not sit.

Luan stood at my shoulder, and I felt him go quiet and wide.

"Drita," Ermal said. "I have bought a lamb. I have bought a priest for the blessing. I have a room ready for you, with a lock on the outside this time."
