Chapter 18: Father and Son
Dario got up from the kitchen doorway.
"Which yard?" he asked.
The fire marshal looked at his bandaged hands.
"The Holdings yard on Boston Street. Signed out at eleven-forty last night on a key card from the executive floor."
"Whose card?"
"I'm asking the questions, Mr. Venturi."
"I resigned. They took my card at the door."
The marshal wrote that down.
He didn't look like he believed it.
When he left, I shut the door and leaned on it.
Dario was standing very still in the hall.
"Who's on the executive floor now?" I asked.
"Chiara," he said. "And anyone my father sends up."
He walked past me to the door.
"Where are you going?"
"It's Sunday."
I knew what that meant.
Every Sunday of my childhood, Tullio Venturi sat at the head of a long table and fed his captains macaroni and gravy.
Every Sunday, his son sat at his right hand.
"Dario. You can't go up there like this."
"Like what?"
"Burned. Angry. With no one."
He looked at me for a long moment.
"Then come as the Keeper," he said. "Your bank burned. That's your business."
