Chapter 27: Starting at the Bottom

The bosses took their guns out of the basket one at a time.

The Philadelphia boss shook Dario's hand on the way out.

"Citizen," he said, like he was trying the word on. "Good luck with that."

The widow stopped in front of me.

"Don't say yes today," she said quietly. "Make him wait. It's good for them."

Then she was gone, on her grandson's arm, into a black car.

When the room was empty, Dario stood by the pier-wood table in his shirtsleeves.

I stood at the other end.

My parents had gone out front.

My mother had closed the door behind them, not quietly.

"I'm not saying yes today," I said.

"I didn't ask you anything today."

"You told me I'd have to say it out loud."

"I did." He picked up his canvas coat. "I'm a patient man, Nata. I've got nothing but time. I don't even have a house."

"Where are you going to sleep?"

"The shoe repair has a room upstairs. Three hundred a month. He threw in a hot plate."

I stared at him.

"That's next door to the bank."

"I noticed that," Dario said.
