Chapter 7: The Back Door

Joost left at one in the morning, because I lay in the dark with my back to him and let him think I was asleep.

I heard him stand in the bedroom doorway for a long time.

I heard him go down the stairs.

I heard the front door close as quietly as a man can close it, and then the engine of his truck pulling away.

I counted to three hundred.

Then I got up, took my bag, and went down through the dark kitchen to the back door.

I had not turned on a single light.

Truus was waiting on the stoop in a long coat and a wool hat, with her car keys in one hand and a shopping bag in the other.

"Put this on," she said, and handed me the hat.

"Where's the plan?" I whispered.

"In the alley. Move."

Behind the garage stood a white van with a bakery's name on the side, its engine ticking.

The man at the wheel was a thin gray-haired guy with flour on his sleeves who did not even look at me.

"My brother-in-law," Truus said. "He does the Muskegon route and has done it for twenty years. He's never asked me a question in his life."

"Truus."

"Get in the back, between the bread racks."

I climbed in.

The van smelled like yeast and warm cardboard.

Truus leaned in through the doorway, close enough that I could see the lines around her mouth.

"Your car is going to Chicago," she said. "I'm driving it myself, with your coat on and your bag in the back, and I'll stop for gas in Gary like I mean to be seen. Your phone is in the glove box. They'll follow it for four hours before they know."
