Chapter 5: The Bet Slip

On Day 3, at ten in the morning, the Holloway Hotels board met for brunch on the Grand's glass terrace, the way it did on the first Wednesday of every month.

I knew because I had baked for that brunch for four years.

The head of the Grand's pastry kitchen had been my trainee.

At seven that morning she had met me at the loading dock, looked over her shoulder twice, and pressed a folded sheet into my good hand.

"I'm sorry," she said. "I put in ten. I thought it was a joke."

It was a lined page from an order pad.

Forty-one names ran down the left side.

Days of the week ran across the top.

The column for Wednesday had nine names, and the one at the head of it was Harrison's.

I had folded it and put it in my coat, next to the lease notice, and walked up the terrace steps on my own feet.

The board members sat at one long table in the sun with coffee and fruit.

Helen sat at the end.

Harrison sat on her right, with Gretchen in a cream suit on his arm and my ring on her finger.

My ring.

It caught the light.

"Sylvie, darling," Helen said, rising. "What a lovely surprise. Pull up a chair."

"I'll stand."

The terrace went quiet.

A waiter froze with a pitcher of orange juice.

I crossed the whole length of the table, past the board members and the sunlight and the silver, and stopped at Helen's elbow.
