Chapter 8: Owing

On Day 4, at closing time, Nathaniel came into the bakery with a single sheet of paper.

He had not rung the bell.

He had held it with two fingers so it wouldn't, and he stood inside the door in the last of the daylight until I saw him.

Dee, wiping the pastry case, said, "I need to take the trash out," and took the trash out, and there was no trash.

"The stationer," Nathaniel said.

I wiped my hands and took the page.

It was an invoice on cream letterhead.

Two hundred place cards, silver ink, calligraphy.

One line was circled in red: Mrs. Harrison Holloway, head table.

Under it, the date.

Twenty-two days ago.

"My assistant called as a hotel client who needed a duplicate order," Nathaniel said. "They sent this. They said Mrs. Holloway placed it herself, in person, with a hand-drawn seating chart."

"Twenty-two days."

"Gretchen's father got his week on Sunday night."

"Then Helen printed my husband's wedding card three weeks before anyone knew." My voice sounded strange to me. "She knew. Or she planned it, and the dying man was only convenient."

"Or she knew he was dying, and she planned a wedding to match."

"Which is worse."

"I didn't say it wasn't."

I put the page down on the flour-dusted counter and flattened it with my bandaged hand.
